Doormat and rug are commonly used in interior design.  They serve both functional and aesthetically purposes.  A good looking doormat or rug could help to keep your house clean and make it beautiful.

Yet, do you know doormat and rug could also bring bad effects in Feng Shui?

The effects of mats and rugs mainly come from the shape and colour.  We shall examine these two factors one by one, but before that, let’s know a little more about Flying Star Feng Shui.

Feng Shui effects of door mats and rugs

The Bad Feng Shui Flying Stars

Some shapes and colours could contribute to bad Feng Shui that could affect health.  It is all related to the Five Elements (WuXing) attribute of the Flying Stars.

According to traditional Feng Shui theories, there are some bad Flying Stars that could affect people if they are located in some critical locations in a house, e.g. the main entrance, kitchen, toilet and bedroom.

These bad Flying Stars belong to the Earth element.  If there is any stuff belonging to the Earth element that is co-located with these Flying Stars, the power of these bad boys could be magnified.

In addition, stuff of the Fire element could also have similar effect, since the Fire element generates Earth element.

Another element that may be bad in this context is Wood.  If you have some basic ideas about the Five Elements theory, you may wonder why, as the Wood element depletes Earth.

Yes, in a sense Wood depletes Earth.  Trees consume the nutrients in soil.  However, wood could also penetrate into soil, which is seen as the Wood element adversely affecting Earth.

When doing Feng Shui, if we want to restrict the power of the Earth element, it is prudent to avoid the Wood element.  Although Wood could overcome Earth, the vigorous battle between the two elements may cause undesirable effects.  It is just like pouring water onto fire, the water may put out fire, but rapid release of smoke and steam, which are also harmful, may be resulted.

Shapes and Feng Shui

So, what are the shapes that could magnify the bad effects of the bad Flying Stars?  The earthy shapes do, like square and rectangle.

Another shape that could add to the bad effects of the negative Flying Stars is triangle, which belong to the Fire element.

Since Wood could interact with Earth in an undesirable way, the long and narrow rectangular shape is not preferred too.

On the other hand, circle and shapes with curves and round corners are relatively safe.

Colours and Feng Shui

Similarly, colours of the Wood, Earth or Fire element could also build up the power of the bad Flying Stars.  These colours are green (Wood), yellow and brown (Earth) and red, orange and purple (Fire).

On the other hand, white, grey, black, silver and gold are more preferred colours in respect of mats and rugs at home.

A Real Case

I have a friend who moved to a new apartment in 2012.  He placed a lime-coloured rug in the living room.  He chose this colour because it’s so refreshing.

Not long after he moved into his new home, his wife had started to develop eczema.  Medical treatment was applied.  At my advice he also removed the rug.  The symptoms had finally improved.

The Take Away

I must stress that the above recommendations about shapes and colours could be considered together with an analysis of the natal Flying Star chart of the house.  If a red rectangular rug is placed in the living room but there is no bad Flying Star in this location, bad effects may not be observed.

Yet, since most people do not have the ability to analyse Feng Shui by themselves, it is advisable to avoid the non-preferred shapes and colours.

In the case when you cannot completely avoid it, for example, the use of a rectangular rug under a rectangular tea table (it would be strange to use a circular rug here), at least stay away from the colours belonging to the Wood, Earth and Fire elements.

That’s all for this Patreon-only Feng Shui newsletter.  See you next time, until then, stay health and happy!

How Could Metal Bells Bring Good Health and Treat Bad Feng Shui

Metal bells have been used by monks to treat prayers’ health problems. This article explains why and how you could do it at home.

Have you ever wondered why there are usually big bronze bells in temples in Japan and China? Apart from religious reasons, these bells could also be justified by Feng Shui theories. Let me tell you why.

Metal is Medicine for Many Feng Shui Problems

According to traditional Feng Shui theories, many bad Feng Shui issues are related to Earth, one of the five elements. For example, among the nine flying stars, the two bad stars have the Earth character.

Wood is the element that “attacks” the Earth element. Should we use Wood to combat Earth? The answer is no. When Wood meets Earth, it is similar to a war between two armies. The Wood may be strong enough to combat Earth but just like all wars, damage would be inevitably caused.

This is why the best treatment to the problems caused by these flying stars is to relieve instead of “attack” them. Earth produces Metal, says the traditional Feng Shui theories. Using metal is just like depleting the Earth element. For this reason, many Feng Shui masters suggest their clients use metal whenever Feng Shui problems arise.

Bronze Bells Could Treat Bad Feng Shui

Traditionally, temples were the place where many people pray for good health. As I mentioned in my last article, it would be difficult to do Feng Shui if the orientation and layout of the house was known. The monks wanted to help but they did not know the orientation and layout of the prayers’ houses. So, the monks placed large bronze bells in the temples, so that payers could ring these bells and get rid of their health problems.

Bronze bells in a temple

How to Use Metal in Modern Homes

If you encounter health problems, you should consult medical doctors. Yet, as an additional way to help, you could consider using metal. Try placing metal bells or wind chimes beside your bed, and make them sound frequently. If your health problem is caused by the flying stars of the Earth element, the power of the metal may improve the Feng Shui.

Small Feng Shui Change Could Bring Big Improvement

A true life example of a client making improvement in health condition just by making a small change at home. The rationale behind is explained.

You think Feng Shui is difficult to apply?  Think again.

This is a recent case.  My client who suffered from migraine for years that she could hardly have restful sleep.  She consulted a few doctors, took medicine as instructed, yet the symptoms were not relieved.

She then turned to alternative treatments.  She tried aroma therapy and acupuncture.  She felt less painful but the problems could not be completely removed.

She was introduced by her friend who was my client. As she lived abroad and could not provide the basic information required, such as floor plans and the orientation of the house measured with a compass, I could not formally offer Feng Shui advices.

Small Changes to Living Environment

Nevertheless, I asked her to at least try to make some changes to her living space. She then moved her bed within her room, from beside the wall to the near the windows.

One month later, she texted me and said her migraine symptoms were much improved. If this could be considered as a success brought by Feng Shui, what actually helped her?

Feng Shui Brings Chi Improvement

Let me explain what difference a simple change in your home settings could bring to the Feng Shui of your home.

According to traditional Feng Shui theories, good and bad Chi (energy) could be found in different directions inside your home. We call these directions “mansions”. Some calculations are required to find out the whereabouts of the good and the bad, all based on measurements by using a compass.

If we could not use a compass, there is no way we accurately tell which mansion is good and which is bad. Yet, by relocating the furniture within your home, you may have moved the furniture from one mansion to another. If a health issue is related to a mansion with bad Chi, moving your bed to another mansion with relatively better Chi could help.

Besides, the orientation of a person lying on the bed also affects the health. Just like your house, your body’s orientation affects how you interacts with the energy in the environment. So, even if you cannot relocate your bed, say the bedroom is too small, try turning yourself 180 degrees, so that your feet (instead of your head) point to the headboard of the bed. This changes your body’s orientation when on bed, and may potentially improve the your Chi.

I would like to remind you that, no body can tell if such simple changes could solve health problems, unless an accurate measurement of the orientation of your home is obtained. Yet, if you suffer from health problems that could not be solved after medical treatment, it may worth to try to make small changes to your living space. Even if it does not work, you could reinstate everything.

Feng Shui Tips – Sharp Edges and Corners

There are many little tweaks that you can apply to your home to make it better. Today I am going to introduce a simple yet important thing, i.e. to avoid sharp edges and corners.

Sharp Corners are Bad Sha

In traditional Feng Shui theories, Sha is how we call bad energy. A very common Sha in modern buildings is sharp edges and corners.

Sharp edges and corners of building
Sharp corner is Feng Shui Sha

In Hong Kong, the city where I live, architects used to avoid sharp corners on the external walls of buildings. The reason was that round corners look better. Besides, pointing a sharp corner to your neighbour was not a friendly act.

Round corner is better

Unfortunately, this is a tradition that is no longer appreciated by modern building designers. Sharp corners do not look good, and they cause bad energy. If you can see a big sharp corner of another building right outside your window, chances are that corner is causing negative effect on the health of your family members.

Sharp Edges are Bad Too

Similarly, sharp edges outside and inside your house are also not good. It is quite common to find beams with sharp edges on the ceiling soffit. This is bad if found in bedroom. Even worse if the beam is located right above your head. Health problem of is prone to be caused.

The Remedies Remedies

So what can you do if you find sharp edges or corners?

Try to cover them up. You may build a false ceiling to hide sharp beams. For sharp corners outside your window, it make good use of window curtains.

Try to avoid sleeping in a room with sharp corners and beams. If it is unavoidable, at least do not allow your bed to be faced by them.

The Yearly Flying Star 4 conflicts with the Monthly Flying Star 8.  You are suggested to place a big red stuff in this direction, such as a red carpet or wall painting.

The Yearly Flying Star 9 is supported by the Monthly Flying Star 4.  This is good for happiness.  It is a good sign if the entrance door or bedroom is in this direction of the house.

2013 Monthly Feng Shui Cures – December

This is the last month of Year 2013.  In Feng Shui, however, this is only the pen-ultimate month of the Year of Snake.  Not until 4 February 2014, we are still living in Year of Snake, so the good and bad directions of the year remain unchanged.  We should still pay attention to the relocation of the Monthly Flying Stars, because their interactions with the Monthly Flying Stars would produce unexpected effects.  This is why I have this monthly Feng Shui cures section in this blog.  Simply follow the instructions below and you can get through this month!

December 2013 Feng Shui Cures

The Feng Shui cures below are valid from 7 December 2013 to 6 January 2014.

East

There is a conflict between “Wood” and “Earth” in East in this month, you are suggested to place a red stuff here, such as red carpet or painting, if this is where the main entrance door or bedroom is located.

Southeast

The Monthly Flying Star 9 meets the Yearly Flying Star 4, this produces a sign of happiness.  Good things may happen if Southeast is where the main entrance or bedroom locates.

South

The Monthly Flying Star 5, which brings sickness, is supported by the Yearly Flying Star 9.  In other words, if the main entrance, bedroom or kitchen is located in South, the chance of the occupants having sickness would be higher.  If this is the case of your house, you are suggested to place a glass of water and a metallic music box here and make it sound often.

Southwest

The Yearly Flying Star 2, which is a sickness star, is weakened by the Monthly Flying Star 7.  You may even place a glass of water here to further strengthen the effect and attract wealth.

West

There is a bad Sha here, the 3 -7 Sha, which means the co-location of Flying Stars 3 and 7, in West in this month.  This is not good for health and relationship.  You should place a glass of water here if it is the direction of the entrance or bedroom.

Northwest

The Monthly Flying Star 2 is weakened by the Yearly Flying Star 6, so the chance of having sickness is not as strong as it should be.  But for the sake of health you should consider placing a glass of water here if this is the location of the main entrance or bedroom.

North

The Yearly Flying Star and Monthly Flying Stars are of “Water” and “Metal” nature, their co-location is good for relationship as well as wealth.

Northeast

There is a struggle between “Wood” and “Earth” in Northeast in this month.  You should place a big red stuff here such as a red carpet or painting.

Center

The Yearly Flying Star 5 is not compatible with the Monthly Flying Star 1, this is not good for the urinary system.  You should consider placing a metallic music box here and make it sound often.

2013 Monthly Feng Shui Cures – November

It’s November now, Winter will come to Northern Hemisphere soon.  There a some directions that may attract sickness in this month.  Beware of having bodily conditions like flu and cold.  On the other hand, there are good directions such as Southeast, which is good for study and job promotion.  Try to make good use of these lucky directions.

The Feng Shui cures below are valid from 7 November to 7 December 2013.

East

Originally East is a direction for disputes ad troubles in this year.  Luckily, this month the Monthly Flying Star 9 arrives, it could reduce the bad effects of the Yearly Flying Star 3.  Besides, it may also add to the chance of having happy events in the family.

Southeast

When the Yearly Flying Star 4 and Monthly Flying Star 1 meets, the “4 – 1” combination is favorable to study, examination, job promotion and fame.  If you need to attend any examination or interview, make good use of this direction by studying in this corner in your house.

South

The battle between “fire” and “metal” elements could produce bad effects to health, particularly for head, stomach or lung.  A cure is to place a big white pebble in this direction.

Southwest

With the arrival of the Monthly Flying Star 8, the “earth” element is doubled.  This is good for wealth generation but may also bring bad side effect of bad health.  You may place a glass of water or a metallic music box here if Southwest is the direction of entrance door or bedroom.

West

There is a battle between “metal” and “wood” could produce bad effects to health, such as injury.  You should place a glass of water in this direction.

Northwest

Same as West, there is also a conflict between “metal” and “wood” in this direction.  You should also place a glass of water here if this is where the entrance door or bedroom locates.

North

The Yearly Flying Star 1 meets Monthly Flying Star 7.  This produces a good effect of good relationship, as well as higher chance of having wealth growth.  It would be nice if the entrance door or bed room is in this direction.

Northeast

The Monthly Flying Star 5 comes to Northeast in this month.  It is the biggest sickness star, so you may expect health conditions in your family members if the entrance door, kitchen or bed room is located in this direction.  A cure is to place a metallic music box here.

Center

The Monthly Flying Star 2 arrives the central portion of the Flying Star Map.  It adds to the bad effects of the Yearly Flying Star 5.  This would have bad effects to health.  You should place a metallic music box here.

2013 Monthly Feng Shui Cures – October

October comes, the current Feng Shui Month would end soon.  It is time for me to tell you how to improve your luck in the coming Feng Shui Month by applying Feng Shui cures.  There are quite a few bad directions in this month that could bring bad health conditions.  On the other hand, you could also find ways to enhance wealth and relationship.  Simply follow the Feng Shui cures below!

The Feng Shui cures below are valid from 8 October to 7 November 2013.

East

The Yearly Flying Star occupying East is 3 and the Monthly one is 1.  The combination of water and wood natures of the two Stars could produce bad effects such as interpersonal issues and disputes.  A simple solution is to place something in pink color here in this month.

Southeast

There is a struggle between wood and earth elements in Southeast in this month due to the presence of the Yearly Flying Star 4 and Monthly Flying Star 2.  Particularly since Flying Star 2 is related to health, you are recommended to place a metallic music box here and make it sound often if this is the location of the bed or main entrance.

South

This is a direction that may bring bad health condition, particularly related to the respiratory system including the lung and throat, since there are two Flying Stars, 7 and 9, together.  Together they may cause such bad effects, you should consider placing a large piece of stone here if it is where the main entrance or bed is located.

Southwest

The Yearly Flying Star 2 (which is bad for health) is supported by the Monthly Flying Star 9, the end result is higher chance of health problem.  Please place a metallic music box and a glass of water here, if it is where the major elements such as main entrance, kitchen or bedroom locates.

West

There is the “big” sickness Flying Star 5 here in this month, luckily the Yearly Star is of metallic nature according to Five-element Theory, the metallic nature could reduce the bad effects.  Despite this, you are recommended to place a glass of water and a metallic music box here.

Northwest

This is a good direction for study, fame and job promotion in this month due to the existence of the Monthly Flying Star 4.  However, this Star is not compatible with the Yearly Flying Star.  There may be chance of metallic wounds (i.e. injury or bodily condition related to metal) if this is where the main entrance, kitchen or bed room (or any other places where the occupant would stay long) located.  Try to place a glass of water here.

North

This is where water meets earth, which is not good for the urinary system including kidney and urinary bladder.  However, it could be good for relationship.  What you need to do is to place a metallic music box here and make it sound often.

Northeast

This is a lucky direction for wealth in this month.  If you want to push the good effects even further, try placing a glass of water here.

Center

The Monthly Flying Star 3 of wood nature attacks the Yearly Flying Star 5 which is of earth nature.  The worst thing is the Flying Star 5 is related to sickness.  Again, a metallic music box could help.

[/s2If]

2013 Monthly Feng Shui Cures – September

September arrived, it is almost fall in the Northern Hemisphere.  This is also time for yet another change in Feng Shui cures for this month’s Flying Star arrangement.  In this month there are bad directions of sickness, as well as good ones for wealth and study.  Simply follow the Feng Shui cures below, you could help yourself and your family to live better lives in this month.

Again, there is a validity for these Feng Shui cures.  Apply them on 7 September or later and remove them on 8 October.  That’s it!

September Feng Shui Cures

East

Where the Yearly Flying Star 3 (of wood nature) meets the Monthly Flying Star 2 (of earth nature), the two would have conflict between wood and earth.  Besides, the 3 – 2 Flying Star combination is notorious to bring interpersonal disputes and conflicts (join the Feng Shui Master Class to see why this combination is bad, plus much more practical Feng Shui knowledge).

This would be bad Feng Shui if this is where the entrance door, bedroom or the desk in the office is located.  To alleviate the problem, you should place a metallic music box here and make it sound often.

Southeast

This is a “double wood” direction because both the Yearly and Monthly Flying Stars are of wood nature according to the Five Elements Theory.  This combination is good for studying, fame and job promotion, but not good for interpersonal relationship.

Again, if the entrance door, bedroom or the desk is located here, you would be adversely affected.  Try to place something pink here, the bigger the better.

South

The Monthly Flying Star 8 is supported by the Yearly Flying Star 9.  Since Flying Star 8 is good for wealth and health, you could expect a good life in this month if the entrance door or bedroom is located here.  For office Feng Shui, having your seat or desk in South is also good.

[s2If current_user_can(s2member_level1)]

Southwest

Beware of your digestive system if the entrance door, kitchen or bedroom is in Southwest of the house.  The Yearly and Monthly Stars have conflict with each other, the emerge of water and earth elements could produce bad effects on the stomach.  You should consider placing something red in this direction.

West

This is a “double metal” direction.  However, unlike the “double wood” direction, this situation is bad.  This combination may induce injury and health problems, particularly those related to metal.  You should place a glass of water here if the entrance door or bedroom is in this direction.

Northwest

The Monthly Flying Star here is 5, which is the big sickness star.  Although the Yearly Flying Star 6 could partly reduce the bad effects, you are still recommended to place a glass of water and a metallic music box here.

North

This is a water meets fire direction in this month.  You may easily tell that these two incompatible elements should not be together, so if they really meet there will be bad effects.  The bad effect of this case is bad temper and emotion.  The solution is to place a glass of water here.

Northeast

Northeast is good for wealth generation in this month because of the co-location of the metallic and earth Flying Stars.  To further enhance the effects, you can place a glass of water here.

Center

The center portion is occupied by the big sickness star 5 in the whole year.  In this month, it is triggered by the Monthly Flying Star 4.  If possible, you should place a metallic music box here and make it sound often.

2013 Monthly Feng Shui Cures – August

August has come, it’s the middle of the hot Summer in the Northern hemisphere.  Starting 7 August, the eighth Feng Shui month in the Year of Snake has arrived, the Monthly Flying Stars’ locations are once again changed.  This affects the Chi inside the house, an originally good direction could turn into a bad one almost overnight.  Although you may have made the necessary Feng Shui settings for the Year of Snake according to my FREE Feng Shui 2013 book, you are recommended to fine-tune the Feng Shui at home or in the workplace in order to get the most out of the good Flying Stars and avoid being affected by the bad Flying Stars.

The Feng Shui cures are valid from 7 August 2013 to 7 September 2013.

August Feng Shui Cures

East

As always, we begin with East first.  Both the yearly and monthly Flying Stars in this direction are of “wood” nature.  This means that there may be more interpersonal disputes and conflicts happening if the entrance door, bed room or desk (for workplace) is located in the East of the house/building.  You are recommended to place something big and red in this direction to dilute the bad effects.

Southeast

For Southeast, three are two Flying Star 4 here.  This Star is very good for study, job promotion and fame.  It would be great if the entrance door, bed room or desk is located here.  Otherwise, try to place four lucky bamboos in this direction instead to make good use of these Stars if you are a student or a working class.

South

This is a happiness direction in this month.  It’s good if the entrance door or bedroom is located here.  However, you should beware of risk of fire, in particular when the kitchen is located in South.

Southwest

This is a double sickness direction where both the Yearly and Monthly Flying Stars are bad.  You should put a metallic music box in this direction and make it sound  often.

West

This direction is where the Yearly and Monthly Flying Stars 7 locate.  It would be advisable to place a glass of water here.

Northwest

Northwest is the direction of change and wealth in this month.  Good to have an aquarium here, or some metal ornaments would be good too.

North

This direction is very good for interpersonal relationship and love.  If this is what you want, place a glass of water here to maximize the positive effects.  On the other hand, if you think you have too much “Tao Hua” (relationship/love), you can place three pots of plant here to reduce the effects.

Northeast

This is the best direction for wealth generation in this month.  It would be great if the entrance door, desk or room is here.  Place a glass of water here to make the positive effects even stronger.

Center

The central portion of a building is where the Yearly and Monthly big sickness stars meet.  You are strongly recommended not to have any building works here.  Besides, place something of metal and could produce sound here if possible, such as a metallic music box or wind chime.

2013 Monthly Feng Shui Cures – July

It’s the middle of the Year of Snake.  Half of the year has completed.  Are you satisfied with your life in the first half of the year?  If your answer is yes, congratulations.  If unfortunately your answer is no, this article may offer you a helping hand.  Here I provided some practical Feng Shui settings that are designed to make use of the Yearly and Monthly Flying Stars.  Follow these instructions to get the best out of the good stars and avoid the bad effects of the bad stars.

The Feng Shui cures below are valid for the period of 7 July to 7 August.

July Feng Shui Cures

East

This is a direction where both the Monthly and Yearly Flying Stars have “wood” characteristic.  This is favorable to study, examination and job advancement.  But this combination also has a side effect of more disputes and conflicts with other people.

To maximize the advantages, you should place a glass of water in this direction.  On the other hand, to reduce the exposure to disputes, you should place something in red or pink here.

Southeast

The Yearly Flying Star is “wood” while the monthly Flying Star is “earth”, the struggle between wood and earth would lead to the outbreak of sickness.  If the main entrance or bedroom is located in this direction, it is likely that the occupiers would have sickness in this month.  A simple solution is to place a metallic music box here and make it sound often.

South

The Monthly Flying Star 1 conflicts with the Yearly Flying Star 9.  When there is a water – fire struggle like this, you’d better place a plant here, to use the “wood” to neutralize problem.

The following Feng Shui cures are valid from 5 June to 7 July 2013, according to the Feng Shui month.  This is why the duration is not the same as a Gregorian month.

Feng Shui Almanac

June Feng Shui Cures

East

There is a Flying Star 3 here for this whole year, while in this month the Flying Star 5 comes.  The latter is a sickness Flying Star and the Flying Stars are not compatible.  If the main entrance of your home or the bed is located in the East, you should place a metallic music box here and make it sound often to reduce the adverse effect of the sickness Flying Star.

Southeast

There is a conflict of “metal” and “wood” here due to the co-location of Flying Stars 4 and 6.  You should place a glass of water or a steady water feature here.  Do not put a dynamic water feature such as a water fountain with running water.

South

The monthly Flying Star 2, which is a sickness star, is boosted by the yearly Flying Star 9.  So if your home’s entrance door or bed room is in this corner, you should place a metallic music box and a glass of water here.

Southwest

Unfortunately Southwest is also not a good direction, because the yearly sickness star is attacked by the monthly Flying Star 4.  You should place a metallic music box here and make it sound often.

West

This direction is not good for lung, stomach, throat and respiratory system in this month, if possible please place eight white pebbles here.

Northwest

Finally there is a good direction!  Northwest is a direction good for wealth growth in this month since the yearly wealth star is supported by the monthly Flying Star 8. If possible, stay in this corner to make any money-related decisions such as buying stocks.  It would be even great if the main entrance door is here.

North

You should place something red in this direction in this month, since the conflict of two Flying Stars may cause interpersonal disputes.

Northeast

The struggle of “water” and “earth” is not favorable to the kidney and urinary system.  Avoid sleeping in this direction in the house.  If possible, place a metallic music box here to cure.

Center

To center is the big sickness location in this year.  Luckily, this month’s Flying Star 7 comes to here to help to reduce the bad effects.  To further reduce the negative energy, place glass of water here.
