Different Feng Shui Systems and the Best Place to Live in this Decade [Master Class Lesson 1]

Welcome to the first lesson of the Feng Shui DIY Master Class!  In this lesson I want to lay a good foundation for your learning, so I’ll explain to you what Feng Shui is and how it affects us.

The theories may seem boring but no worry, I have included a practical Feng Shui tips in this article.  Feng Shui is not simply about the interior design of your house, the place where you live also matters.  Even in the same country, there are some regions / counties / provinces / communities that are far better than others.  The first practical Feng Shui tips I’m going to giveaway is the method to choose such a good place to live, not for today only, but fot the coming 10+ years.  Do you want to learn it?  Yes, I bet you want.  So let us begin the lesson!

 

The “4 Schools of Feng Shui”

If you have attended any Feng Shui classes or read any Feng Shui books before, chances are you heard of anyone or more of the following so-called Feng Shui theories.  These are the most popular way people categorize Feng Shui systems:

  • Form Feng Shui
    • A system that disregard or pay little attention to directions.  More focus is put on the look, color and form (巒頭) of the external and internal environment of the house.
  • Compass (Ba Gua) Feng Shui
    • A system that divides a house into 8 sections, each has a Gua (卦) number.
  • Classical (Flying Star) Feng Shui
    • A system that assigns 9 flying stars to 8 directions and the center of a house.
  • Western (Spiritual) Feng Shui
    • A system that puts a Ba Gua (八卦) – a grid with 8 cells, onto the house without aligning it with actual directions.

You may have seen discussions about which system works or not on the internet.  I say these discussions did not get to the point.  Why?

A simple answer is, the above is simply not what’s written in Chinese Feng Shui theories!  We do not categorize Feng Shui systems this way.

Feng Shui As An Integrated System

If I have to “categorize” these Feng Shui “theories”, I would do it this way:

Feng Shui theories

In fact, no authentic Chinese Feng Shui practitioner would use only one of the above systems.  The first system (in red), Form Feng Shui is a school that requires little to no mathematical calculations.  This system simply examines the shapes and relative locations of objects, lighting, sound, movement of air, etc.  If you learn more about this system, you will know it is quite a common-sense science.  For example, Form Feng Shui requires that there should be sufficient lighting in the living space.

The second group (in orange), which includes Ba Gua Feng Shui, Flying Star Feng Shui and some other systems, is a group of theories that requires mathematical calculations.  These systems recognize the characteristics of different Guas (卦) or Flying Stars (飛星) and their impacts on occupants of a house.  By knowing they whereabouts, we know what to do and what to avoid at particular directions.

The third type above (in blue) is almost absent in Chinese society (because it is a contemporary system with a more spiritual focus, in other words, not quite supported by Feng Shui calculations).  In this e-book I also introduces authentic Chinese Feng Shui, we will not look at this fourth system.

There is a saying in traditional Feng Shui theories that “Form and Calculation, none of them is dispensable” (巒頭理氣,缺一不可).  All these factors affect your interaction with your house, so as your house with the environment.  Ba Gua and Flying star Feng Shui systems require lots of Calculations, but without the appreciation of Form, you do not completely understand your house and its effects on you.

After all, Feng Shui is all about identifying a dwelling with good living environment.  Even if you get a house with the best orientation (with Gua or Flying Star support) but situated in a bad location and has bad lighting and color design, you won’t feel comfortable living in this house.

So, an experienced Feng Shui practitioner would look at:

Form and Calculation

This is why Feng Shui is an integrated system.

 

How Does Feng Shui Affect Us?

Feng Shui studies three basic elements, time (時), space (地) and people (人).  Time is usually dynamic while the space is basically static.  People are in between time and location, affected by both of them.

Time

Time changes, so as Feng Shui.  Good Feng shui for a specific time could turn bad later.  A typical example is Flying Star Feng Shui, which put much emphasis on changes according to time.  According this system, there are 9 flying stars changing their locations every hour, day, month, year… different Flying Stars have different characteristics in different time period, sometimes they are good sometimes they bring bad luck.  The study of Flying Star Feng shui is to find out the prevailing Flying Stars and maximize the use of them to boost good luck.

Space

Space is static.  East is East forever.  A red rug is a red rug, if red color is not good for you the bad effect would be here forever unless you remove it from your living room.

People

This is why we say the Feng Shui of a house affects you only if you live in that house.  I explained this in a previous email newsletter by quoting a real story.  Basically, Feng Shui is all about the interaction of the environment with the people living inside.  You may have a luxury holiday house in Asia but you are only affected by the house in New Jersey where you sleep in everyday.  The prevailing Feng Shui of a specific time and the environment of a particular location affect you, because you so happen appear at that time and space.  Does it make sense?

 

So How Do We Begin?

Now you know the basis of Feng Shui.  From now on, don’t be fooled by misleading Feng Shui talks.  If somebody say red is absolutely bad for living room in whatever situation, I believe he does not know the essence of Feng Shui.  Perhaps the prevailing Feng Shui color is red, perhaps the occupant’s lucky color is red, how can we be so sure that red is bad?

In this e-course, you will learn both Form and Calculation Feng Shui.  You will see how you can find out the best Feng Shui for the particular time, space and people.

Takeaway Feng Shui

At the end of each lesson, I’ll include a practical Feng Shui tip that you can take away.  Especially in the early stage of your learning, you’ll come across quite some theories, and theories are usually plain.  I don’t want you to be frustrated by the boring theories, so I’ll give you one premium Feng Shui tip that you can use instantly.

The tip of this lesson is choosing a place of residence for 10+ years of luck.  You will soon learn the 9 periods of Feng Shui, for now, please simply remember that we are now experiencing the 8th period (八運 in Chinese).  This period began already in 2004 and will end in 2023 (to be precise, until 3 February 2024).  So we still have 10+ years to go before the 9th period comes.

In this 8th period, it is highly favorable Feng Shui if there is running water in the Southwest side of your living place.  If you need to find a place to live, you should try very best to find such a place.  I know it may be a bit hard to understand, let’s see an example.

The satellite image above was downloaded from Google Maps.  It shows the metro area of the city I live in, Hong Kong (if you don’t know where Hong Kong is, it is a city with over 7 million population in Southern Asia).  Blue color denotes the sea and green is the rural area where mountains and trees are.

The red-shaded area is a reclaimed land created by land fill.  Since year 2000, big residential estates, mega shopping malls, the tallest building in Hong Kong (an office tower) and hotels ran by famous operators were gradually built and opened.  This parcel of land has changed into one of the most expensive area in the city (residential flat prices more than doubled in the last 10 years)!  The largest theatre-exhibition-gallery mix in town, called West Kowloon Cultural District, will also be built here and is scheduled to open in 2015 (the first phase).

A major reason that this area became so flourishing is it location.  You can see in the satellite image above that there is a big sea in its Southwest!

So, if you ever need to choose a place to live, you should find a place where it has a sea frontage in the Southwest.  Or, at least you can see the sea in the Southwest direction!

2013 Feng Shui Cures – January

January 2013 Feng Shui

East is where the yearly Study Star 4 meets the monthly Relationship Star 1.  This direction is good for study and examination.  If you need to attend an examination in this month, you should study in this direction of the room or place the desk here.

Southeast is where two bad Flying Stars meets, if unfortunately your house’s door, bedroom or kitchen is in this direction, you should put something with metal and water characteristics here, such as a music box and a glass of water.

South is good for interpersonal relationship as well as wealth, it’s nice if the door or bedroom is here.

Southwest is where where the yearly Flying Star 3 comes, it should be a direction of disputes.  However, the monthly Flying Star 9 arrives here in this month, so it reduces the bad effect of the Flying Star 3 and bring happiness.  So you don’t need to alter the Feng Shui here.

West is a “double-earth” direction in this month, so bad health may appear if the bed, door or kitchen is here.  The solution is the same as Southeast.

Northwest could be a bad direction with the implication of loss of wealth, and adding the monthly Flying Star 4 may mean bad health and injury.  You should put a glass of water, aquarium or water feature here.

North is similar to West because it is also a “double-earth” direction with Flying Star 2 involved.  You need to do the same as in Southeast and West if the bed, kitchen or door is located here.

Northeast is where “fire” and “metal” characteristics combat, so you need to put a stone here.

Center is also not a good direction.  If in the unlikely case your bed or door in located right in the middle of the house, you should place a glass of water or a vase with water here.

The Luckiest Feng Shui Direction in Year of Snake (2013)

In the last post I told you which direction is the worst in the coming Year of Snake, this time let’s look at something good – the best direction in 2013.

Before I reveal this direction, let me tell you why it is regarded as the best direction.  According to Feng Shui theories, there are totally 9 “Yun” (i.e. periods), from the first to the ninth, each Yun equals to 20 years.  9 x 20 = 180 years, so every 180 years the cycle repeats.  From Year 2004 to Year 2023 is the Eighth Yun.  During the Eighth Yun the Flying Star 8 is the luckiest, so the direction where the Flying Star 8 locates in a year is the best direction of that year.

The Flying Star 8 occupies Northeast in the coming Year of Snake.  It follows naturally that Northeast is the best direction in this year.  This Flying Star brings wealth, happiness and good luck, we certainly want to maximize our use of it.

If the entrance door of your house happen to locate in the Northeast, it means that in general your family would enjoy a good year in the Year of Snake.  Similarly, if your desk is located in this direction, you may have a better year in the workplace.  To cut it short, such a good direction is good for entrance door, bed, desk, kitchen and everything and everywhere you would stay a few hours a day or pass through several times daily.

What if none of these in your house is located in Northeast?  No worry, you can also use Feng Shui ornaments to boost your luck.  Your top choice is a water feature such as fountain or aquarium.  Alternatively, you can place a large piece of crystal, jade or other “earth” related ornament here.  Where can you find such Feng Shui ornaments?  The most convenient place is Amazon online store!  Just search for “Feng Shui water feature” ad you can find quite a lot.

The Worst Feng Shui Direction in 2013 Year of Snake

According to Feng Shui theories, the good and bad directions rotate every year.  A good direction this year may become bad in the next year.  This is exactly the case for 2013 Year of Snake.  A direction that was good last year would become awfully bad in 2013.

This bad direction is East.  It was a direction good for job promotion and study in 2012.  However, it becomes the source of disputes and troubles in 2013 due to the presence of Flying Star 3.  If the main door of your flat or office is located in this direction, chances are you would have much tougher times in the coming year.

A real case is the Chief Executive of Hong Kong (consider this position as the mayor of a big city with over 7 million citizens).  Some of you may remember that I live in Hong Kong, a city in Southern Asia.  In 2012 the main entrance of the Chief Executive’s house is exactly where the  Flying Star 3 locates.  It turns out that the original Chief Executive Mr. Donald Tsang and his successor Mr. CY Leung who replaced Mr. Tsang since July, faced great challenges in this year.  Scandals happened on both guys, and the Legislative Council initiated two Motions of Non-Confidence against them.  Mr. Tsang was investigated by the authority for alleged acceptance of advantages.

Now you see how terrible this Flying Star 3 is?  No only this, the East direction is also occupied by an extra thing, San Sha (三煞).  San Sha is not a flying star, but it nevertheless brings bad luck.  It literally means three killings.  It would not affect you if you don’t touch it, but if there is any building works, even as small as a general repair of your flat, it could affect the health of the occupants.  Illness and bodily injury may happen.

East could be regarded as a terrible direction in the coming Year of Snake.  My advices are, (1) do not carry out any building/repair works in this direction, and (2) place a big object in red in this direction, such as a big red lamp or a red carpet.  This method could reduce the bad effects of the Flying Star 3.

3 Types of Good and 7 Types of Bad Feng Shui House

As you know Feng Shui is a system with long tradition in Chinese society.  All Feng Shui practitioners learn their skills from books written by renowned Feng Shui masters hundred years ago.  The role of modern Feng Shui designers is to interpret old Feng Shui theories in the modern day context.

In this article, I’m going to show you what good and bad Feng Shui house are according to a very famous old Feng Shui book, 八宅明鏡.  Although these theories were not new, they are very applicable to nowadays houses.

 

3 Types of Good Feng Shui House

(1) A house with a regular footprint, preferably in square or rectangular shape, with support at the back and a space in front of the entrance door.  There should also be buildings or hills on the left and right, preferably the left hand side is higher.  The rooms inside the house are properly sized.  This is the best type of house which brings good wealth and health.

(2) A house with regular footprint and a full height solid fence wall.  This creates an artificial boundary which serves as the support.

(3) A house with flat and rectangular foundation, the house sitting in the center, not too high nor too low.  The height of a house matters, if it is too high while the footprint is small, the house is not good (see paragraph 5 below).

 

7 Types of Bad Feng Shui House

(4) A house with disproportionate room sizes.  For example, while the living and dining rooms are very large the bedrooms are extremely small, or vice versa.  In Feng Shui the active areas are Yang (陽) and the sleeping areas are Yin (陰), we need a balanced house with properly sized Yang and Yin areas.

(5) A house with a small footprint and a few or more storeys, without no supporting houses nearby.  It looks like a narrow rod standing up on the ground.  This kind of house could not provide support to occupiers.

(6) A house with defective foundation.  This is certainly not good because if the foundation is poor the walls and floor slabs above would not be stable.  People living in this house may have body conditions and illness easily.

(7) A house without insufficient lighting, wide and deep rooms but only small windows.  Sometimes even if the house itself has big windows, there won’t be sufficient daylight if there are many trees surrounding the house.  This kind of house is easy to attract spirits (ghosts).

(8) Defective house with broken window, poorly maintained walls and finishes, looks like an old man without care.  This kind of house would never bring wealth to the occupier.

(9) House with improperly high foundation. Usually a house’s foundation should level with the surround ground.  However, some houses have high foundations which looks like a plinth underneath the house.  So the house’s entrance would be above the surround ground. This makes Chi difficult to go into the house, so as wealth and good luck.

(10) A small house with small rooms and narrow corridors.  Chi could not flow smoothly inside the house, affecting the health of the occupiers.

 

Feng Shui House

 

You see all these concerns the form and shape of a house irrespective of the directions.  In fact, Feng Shui is more about the living environment.  If you could manage to build a house with good size and shape, even if you don’t know anything about Flying Star or Ba Gua, chances are your house would have not bad Feng Shui.

Is Feng Shui Science?

Is Feng Shui science?  This is a question frequently asked by people.  If we consider “science” as something accurate, predictable and measurable, Feng Shui may be unale to qualify as scientific, because we cannot precisely predict the improvement some Feng Shui measures could bring.  However, if we read between the lines of Feng Shui books and examine the rationales behind, there are traces of “science” behind Feng Shui.

Let us look at an example here.  Below is the configuration of two parcels of farmland, A and B.  With the river running in this shape, A and B receive “embracing water” (環抱水) and “sickle water” (反弓水) respectively.  According to Chinese Feng Shui theories, farmland A is better than B in terms of wealth growth, why?

Is Feng Shui Science?

Let’s consider this from geographical point of view.  As time goes by, sediments in the water naturally accumulate along the perimeter of A while the soil of B would gradually be washed away by the movement of water.  It turns out the farm land size of A would grow and that of B would shrink.  In the past farmland is the source of income, so the income generated from A would increase while that from B would drop.

If you want some proof about this natural phenomenon, the following photo downloaded from Wikipedia shows the accumulation of sand and mud on only one side of the river at Mississippi River. The soil on one side is eroded by water while the other side has a sand bar formed.

The 2012 Chinese zodiac horoscope predictions for Monkey is interesting.  On one hand you have bad stars that would lead to disputes, quarrels, lawsuits and personal injuries.  On the other hand, you have good stars that bring harmony and support by others.  By examining both sides I came to the conclusion that there will be hiccups in your working life but with the support by others you could enjoy a fair working life.  No matter wage earners or business owners, there may be disputes and even frauds.  Be very careful when signing contracts and making deals.

This is not a healthy year for Monkeys.  Old people are advised to have body check.  Female, especially those who are pregnant, should take good care of themselves.  Other people born in a Monkey year should also beware of personal injury.  Be careful when driving and avoid dangerous activities.

This is also not a year for sweet love unless you are currently single because single Monkeys have chance to find a boyfriend / girlfriend.  Otherwise, those who are in love and those who are married may have conflicts with you partner.

The luck for people with this zodiac sign is generally good.  You have good luck in work and good prospect to have stable income in job.  However, please stay away from speculation and gambling.  There may also be gossips around you, otherwise your working life is smooth.

And since you may need to work for long hours, beware of pressure and your health conditions.  You should take particular take of your digestive system.

Those who are single may be able to find a partner.  Those who are in love may consider getting married.  Only married Roosters would have more disagreements with your better half.

The 2012 Chinese zodiac horoscope predictions for Dog are not so good.  Due to a few bad stars, you have obstacles in the working place.  You may need to work hard with disproportionate results.  You also may lose money in the speculative market and have some big expenditures.  Spend wise and do not gamble.

Your social life in this year is less than satisfactory.  Those who are in love may find a third person intervening into your relationship.  Those who are single may meet new people but do not expect that could turn into a stable and favorable relationship.

Mind your personal hygiene and what you eat.  And there may be personal injuries so drive carefully and beware when using sharp tools.  You should also pay attention to the health condition of your family and friends.

You have a good Year of the Dragon.  Although things may start not so well they would later turn good.  There are people who could help, make sure you seek assistance whenever you face a problem.  Your regular income and earning from investment is not bad, just be reminded that in the middle of the year there may be some loss.

If you are married, there may be friction between you two.  Those who are single and those in love would have an enjoyable year.  If you are yet to get married, this is when you should consider it.

The only negative thing about Pigs is health.  Probably since you work very hard, you have have minor health problems.  Also beware of digestive system problems.

Year of the Dragon 2012 Predictions for Dragon, Snake, Horse and Sheep

In the last 2012 Year of the Dragon Predictions post, I have provided a general overview for Rat, Ox, Tiger and Rabbit.  This time, we will look at Year of the Dragon 2012 predictions for Dragon, Snake, Horse and Sheep.

Probably you have heard of the saying that whenever your own zodiac sign is the same as the current year, you have troubles in this year.  Well, this is kind of true.  When preparing for this Year of the Dragon 2012 predictions series, I found that Dragon is among the less satisfactory group of people.  And you would find the same in coming years as well (i.e. Snakes have worse luck in the Year of Snake, etc.).

Simply put, when your zodiac sign is the same as the sign of the current year, you said to be in your own fate year (本命年).  This is a year when you would see changes.  In other words, in your 本命年 things are not always bad, they just change.  The reason that people say this is a bad year is that you would have fluctuations in your life and emotions easily.  Most people cannot clear their mind and focus on their targets in these years.  If you know how to adapt to new environments and manage your emotions, 本命年 is not always bad.

So you will face a lot of challenges in this year.  There will be obstacles, problems and even traps for you to overcome.  This is also a ear when you could not easily earn from the investment market unless you have a clear mind.

The “change” theme of Dragons also affect relationships.  Single people may see a change, i.e. finding a new boyfriend / girlfriend, but your relationship may end or change soon.  Married Dragons may have conflicts with their better half.

For health, there are two bad stars affecting all Dragons.  You may have injury easier.

This year, you have three lucky stars that help you.  They bring good luck and happiness.  They also help you to solve problems.  If you travel a lot for work or if you are planning to work or study abroad, this is a good year.  However, there are also three bad stars that could bring you disputes and lawsuits, health problems and the feeling of loneliness.

Combining the above, your luck in the workplace is so-so, because there may be real troubles when you work with other people.  Unless you need to travel for work, this is not a good year for you.  You should be very cautious when you sign contracts or conclude deals.

This is a fairly good year for single male Snakes.  Female Snakes may feel lonely sometimes.

You may have more workload which may affect your health.  Take care of yourself.

The Year of Dragon 2012 predictions for Horse is quite complicated.  On one hand there are some lucky stars that bring good problem solving and analytical abilities to you (particularly for students and white collars), on the other hand some bad stars hurt your health and interpersonal relationships.

Taking into account all of these, I think your Year of Dragon is not bad.  There may be problems at work that you need to stay focused to solve.  White collars and those working in the government or politicians have a particularly good year.  Your regular income is OK but investment luck is weaker.

Health is fair, some minor problems may appear.  Relationship is good, single Horses may be able to find “the one”, those in a relationship may consider getting married.  Your relationship with co-workers and friends is good too.

This is a great year for you.  Wealth, career, love and health are all good due to a few lucky stars.  You should however mind the following matters:

  • While you can earn you’ll also have big expenditure.  Learn how to save and accumulate wealth.
  • Beware of gossips around you and contractual disputes.
  • If you are married, this year you may be tempted to cross the borderline.  There may be a third person intervening your marriage if you do not behave properly (because your luck in relationships is so good).
  • In the middle of the year there may be minor health problems.  Young Sheep may have injury too.

The Year of Dragon is coming (starting 4 February), it is time to read your 2012 Year of the Dragon predictions. To help you to know your fate before the new year comes, I will write a few posts revealing 2012 Year of the Dragon predictions. In this first post I will talk about Rat, Ox, Tiger and Rabbit.

Year of Birth: 1924, 1926, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008

In 2012 Year of the Dragon, San Tai (三台) and San He (三合) stars affect all people of Rat zodiac. These two stars bring good working life, you should have a good prospect in your business. Wage earners could also enjoy an easy life in the workpalce. Besides, the San Tai star also makes wealth growth more probable.

However, there are also Guan Fu (官符) and Wu Guai (五鬼) stars affecting the Rat zodiac. These bad stars mean interpersonal problems, disputes and even lawsuits. If you were born in the Year of the Rat, yuo should be really careful when you sign on contracts and make deals with others. Also beware of what you say.

This is a year when “single Rats” have higher chance to find the princess / white knight. If you have a boyfriend / girlfriend in stable status, this is a good year to get married.

For health, you may have sickness and injury but they are not major ones.

 

2012 Year of the Dragon Predictions – Ox

Tai Yin (太陰) star enters the life of Oxen in the Year of the Dragon. People born in the Year of the Ox have higher chance of buying assets (e.g. a new home, a new car, etc.). It also enhances the interpersonal relationship of Male and the study of students. Otherwise people of this zodiac sign need to work long hours with limited results. There may even be loss in wealth.

Similar to Rats, people of Ox zodiac have higher chance to get involved in disputes, quarrels and lawsuits, due to the Guan Suo (貫索) star. You should listen to your superior and co-workers more, do not take control over everything.

This is a good year for lovers and those who are single. People of the Ox zodiac could make new friends and even find the beloved in this year.

You should beware of what you eat because you may have some body conditions and sickness, particularly in the digestive system.

 

2012 Year of the Dragon Predictions – Tiger

Year of Birth: 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010

Wuan Chang (文昌) and Tian Guan (天官) stars affect all Tigers in the Year of the Dragon. They bring intelligence and luck to make you think smarter. You can solve problems easily (good for students). Besides, the latter star is perfect for people who work in the government or in the politics. You have luck to increase your wealth but beware of traps and fraud. There may be complains by customers, co-workers and your boss.

Xang Mun (喪門) and Hu Wei (虎尾) are two bad stars that affect not only you but you family. The former one literally means funeral and loss of family member. Take good care of yourself and the health of your family and your friends. These stars also mean unexpected events such as accidents and injuries and unstableness of your emotion.

This is not a good year for lovers. Chances are you may have disputes with your beloved moer often. Single Tigers may not easily find his girl / her boy.

 

2012 Year of the Dragon Predictions – Rabbit

Tai Yang (太陽), which literally means the sun, is the star that brings energy, luck and good interpersonal relationship to Rabbits, especially for Female. There will be people willing to help you even if you encounter difficulties. And this is a good year for making new friends and having a new relationship. You could expect a growth in your job-related income. Rememberto talk less and do more. Your luck in side-income such as investment earning and gambling is not good.

However, there is also a bad star, Tian Kung (天空), which brings bad people that may affect your work and life. These are selfish and troublesome people that cause damage.

You have to be cautious when going outdoor because there may be personal injury. You health is fair, there may be minor sickness.

Feng Shui Living Room – The Do’s and Don’ts

To create a Feng Shui living room is one of the most common reasons for hiring a Feng Shui master.  People spend a few hours a day in the living room, the Chi in this place definitely affects the well-being of the occupants.

How could you create a Feng Shui living room?  Well there are many rules to follow and if you are serious about it, you’ve got to use a Feng Shui compass and do some calculations.  Here in this article I will share with you some simple tips to create a a Feng Shui living room.  Do not under-estimate the effects of these tips, although they are simple steps to take, doing all of them could bring you a good Feng Shui living room.

 

Feng Shui Living Room – Colors

You must have heard some other Feng Shui gurus telling you to use particular colors to create a Feng Shui living room.  For example, some gurus say that red is perfect for all living rooms.  On the other hand, I have seen other gurus recommending cold colors as the best for a Feng Shui living room.  These universal advices may be true but I would prefer personalizing your living room according to either the need of your particular home or the birthday of yourself, since no two houses are equal, so as human being.

I wrote another article in this blog about choosing Feng Shui colors.  These colors could improve your Chi and bring you luck.  They are found according to your own year of birth, so they are more powerful in affecting you.  You should consider using these colors in your Feng Shui living room.

Another simple way to choose colors for your Feng Shui living room is to follow the flying stars (飛星) of a particular year.  According to the flying star theory, the most popular and powerful Feng Shui theory, there are 9 flying stars that relocate to different directions every year.  Each of these flying stars carry different meaning and power.  By using the appropriate colors you can absorb the positive energy of good flying stars.  On the other hand, if you wrongly used some colors that trigger the bad effects of bad flying stars, you may attract bad luck.

Feng Shui Living Room – Dynamic v.s. Static

Some people believe that the living room is where you watch TV and listen to music so it must be noisy.  Some other people believe that the living room must be calm and silent so that people in the room could enjoy peace and harmony.  Which one of these arguments is correct?

Both of them are true and false.  It is illogical to mute your TV simply to ensure you have a silent living room.  On the other hand, it is definitely not good frmo living science point of view to have a noisy living room.  We need a balance here.

Feng Shui Living Room - Yin and Yang

This is the dynamic v.s. static theory in Feng Shui.  A Feng Shui living room should have a balance of both elements just like the Yin (陰) and yang (陽) of a Tai Chi (太極) symbol.  What really matters is how you locate them.  Generally speaking directions with bad flying stars should avoid all dynamic elements.  On the other hand, you can use dynamic objects such as a clock, water fountain or TV to maximize the positive effects of good flying stars.  Again, you can refer to my FREE guidebook for more information.

Another paramount rule to follow is timing.  Obviously the living room could be a bit noisy and dynamic in day time but at night it should be calm and silent.  Very logical, right?

 

Feng Shui Living Room – Mirrors

Mirror is the love and hate of Feng Shui masters.  If used correctly they could magnify the positive effects of good flying stars.  Conversely, mirrors could also be bad if placed wrongly since they could also and power-up the bad effects of bad flying stars.  You should take great care about mirrors if you want a good Feng Shui living room.

It is quite common to find mirrors in modern day living rooms because many interior designs love using mirrors to create an illusion that the living room is enlarged.  Make sure you check the directions before placing mirrors in the living room (and bed room, study room, etc… toilet is a different issue we may discuss separately).

 

Feng Shui Living Room – Lighting

A Feng Shui living room must have abundant lighting.  Light is the source of energy.  Believe it or not, a dark house may attract spirits according to Feng Shui theories.

The best source of light is the sun.  Natural daylight is far better than artificial lighting but if there are physical constraints in your house that the living room cannot get sufficient daylight, use artificial lighting.  What does it mean by “sufficient lighting”?  You can test by trying to read a book in the darkest corner of your living room.  If you can easily read all the words, the living room is OK.  The is a basic requirement for a Feng Shui living room.
