Feng Shui Floor Numbers, Building Shapes and Colors [Master Class Lesson 7]

7-Floor numbering

Hello!  Welcome back to the Feng Shui Master Class.  We have studied the internal environment in the last two lessons.  The internal Feng Shui is what you could control via interior design.  In this week we will look at things you cannot control after buying the flat.  They are the floor number and shape and color of your apartment.

Yes, the floor number and building shape could affect Feng Shui.  Usually when I check the Feng Shui of an apartment, I would firstly check if the floor numbering is good.  I would also look at the shape of the whole building.  The reason is simple, you can change the interior design to whatever style as long as the structure of the building so allows.  But you cannot change the floor number nor the shape or color of the building unless you relocate.  These are what many people overlook but actually quite important Feng Shui elements.

Your Five-Element Characteristic

To check whether the floor number of your apartment and the shape and color of the building fit you, we need to know which of the five elements you belong to.  This could be very complicated because usually we need to check your actual birthday.  An easier way to do so is to check your year of birth and thus the zodiac sign.  Below is a list of zodiac signs according to the year of birth.

Rat: 1924, 1926, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020, 2032

Ox: 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021, 2033

Tiger: 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034

Rabbit: 1927, 1939, 1951 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023, 2035

Dragon: 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024, 2036

Snake: 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025, 2037

Horse: 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026, 2038

Sheep: 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027, 2039

Monkey: 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016, 2028, 2040

Rooster: 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029, 2041

Dog: 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, 2030, 2042

Pig: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031, 2043

There is a trick here.  If you were born before 4 February of a year, you should treat yourself as born in the previous year when finding out your zodiac sign.  For example, if you were born in 20 January 1981, you should be a “monkey” instead of “rooster”.  Why?  According to Chinese Feng Shui principles a year begins in Spring, and Spring usually begins on 4 February.  Before 4 February the new year is not actually arrived.

Should I Live on High or Low Level?

Not all people are suitable to live on high levels.  Some people would be more suitable to live in low-rise buildings or the lower floors of a high-rise building.  There is no exact definition for “high” and “low”, it really depends on the general situations of the place you live.

For example, in the city where I live in, Hong Kong, most residential buildings are over 30-storey high.  So we are used to count the 10th floor and below as lower floors, and 21st floor and above as high.  But in cities where the population density is lower, the buildings are usually lower.  A general rule of thumb is to divide the building into three portions, the lowest 1/3 being the lower floors, than the middle floors and the rest 1/3 are the high levels.

Pig, Rat

Lower levels are more suitable to you for residential purpose.

Snake, Horse

If possible, you should choose to live on high levels.

Tiger, Rabbit

High levels are most suitable for you to live.

Monkey, Rooster

Same as Snake, Horse, Tiger and Rabbit, high levels are most suitable for you to live.

Dragon, Dog, Ox, Sheep

You are most suitable to live in low to medium floors.

Feng Shui Building Shapes and Colors

Another critical element to consider when finding an apartment that matches your own five-element characteristic is the shape of the building.

Fire Buildings

Triangular building

Fire shaped building are characterized by sharp angles and/or terraced shape, such as triangular buildings.  And for color, buildings fully in red, orange and purple also have fire characteristic.

These buildings are mostly suitable for people of Sheep, Horse, Dragon, Dog, Ox and Sheep zodiac signs.

Metal Buildings

Metal buildings are in circle and semi-circle shapes.  Besides, if a building is fully painted in gold, silver, yellow or white, it is also a metal building.

These buildings are suitable for people of Pig, Rat, Monkey and Rooster zodiac signs.

Water Buildings

Wave-shaped building

Water buildings are typically in wave-shape or black, grey and blue colors.  They are suitable for Pig, Rat, Tiger and Rabbit.

Wood Buildings

Wood buildings (i.e. buildings with wood characteristic according to Chinese Feng Shui theories) are very common.  In terms of shape, all long and rectangular (i.e. not square) buildings are wood buildings.  The relevant color is green.  This type of building is best occupied by Snake, Horse, Tiger and Rabbit.

Earth Buildings

Hollow square building

All perfect square or hollow square shaped building are earth buildings.  For color, the matching color is brown and anything earth-tone (except yellow).  What does it mean by a hollow square shaped building?  The above photo was taken in Hong Kong, showing the interior of a public housing estate.  The shape of the building is square, but there is a big atrium inside.  So if you view it from the sky, you could see a square box which is hollow inside.

This type of building is good for Monkey, Rooster, Dragon, Dog, Ox and Sheep.

Takeaway Feng Shui

This time I shall share with you tips about the location of air conditioners.  In Asia where I live, the climate is hot and humid, so we are used to installed air conditioners for cooling and de-humidification.  The location of air conditioner could seriously affect the Feng Shui of your home.  Let us have a look at the requirements.

Kitchen

If the air conditioner is so positioned that the wind will blow to the stove, this is bad Feng Shui.  The cold air would reduce the heating effect of the stove as well as disturb the cooking process.  So if possible you shouldn’t position the air conditioner to blow over the stove.

Dining Table

Air conditoner in dining room

The dinning table is where we eat.  For two reasons we do not want the air conditioner to blow air over the table.  Firstly, the hot food would turn cold faster.  Secondly, the people enjoying the meal would be hit by the air movement.

Living Room

Every year there are two directions that are illness-related.  They are those where the Flying Stars 2 and 5 locate.  The air movement generated by the air conditioner would magnify the bad effects of these Flying Stars.  You can find out the location of these two Stars in my yearly FREE Feng Shui guide.

Bedroom

Do not position the air conditioner in a way that the air would blow over the people laying on bed.  Usually when people sleep their immunity would be lowered a bit.  The cold air may bring common cold easier.  Besides, the air movement above your face would also bring annoyance.
