Welcome back! In our second lesson of Ba Gua Feng Shui, we shall learn how to find out your true personal Gua and the lucky directions of yours accordingly. After this lesson you would be able to tell which direction is good for you so as to maximize the use of these directions in daily life.
Actually according to authentic Chinese Ba Gua Feng Shui, people born in different years could be categorized into 8 types, each with a matching Ming Gua (命卦). In the image below you can see eight Guas surrounding the Tai Chi (太極) logo. These are the Ming Guas I have been talking about.
If you have read other Ba Gua Feng Shui books before, you may have came across a term “Gua Number” or “Kua Number”. What does it mean? The 1 to 9 Gua Number that you are used to see in other Feng Shui books are a modified version that originated from the Chinese Ba Gua Feng Shui theories. I would not say the 1 to 9 Gua Number system is incorrect but it is certainly not the authentic Ba Gua Feng Shui practised by Chinese Feng Shui masters. If you have chance to ask any Feng Shui master in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong, he/she would tell you that there are only 8 Ming Guas.
At the end of this article, I shall also tell you how to choose the luckiest couch for you. Do you know the color and shape of a couch affects the Feng Shui of your flat? Read on to know more!

If you map out the eight directions of the eight Ming Guas and superimpose one another , you would find out an interesting fact. There are four Ming Guas that always have Northeast, Southwest, West and Northwest as lucky directions, while the remaining four Ming Guas always have these directions as unlucky ones. Why so?
We call the former four Ming Guas as the four “Western Ming Guas” (東四命) and the latter four Ming Guas as the four “Eastern Ming Guas” (西四命). For Western Ming Guas, Northeast, Southwest, West and Northwest are always good directions. For Eastern Ming Guas, Northeast, Southwest, West and Northwest are always bad directions. In other words, Qian, Gen, Kun and Dui are Western Ming Guas while Kan, Zhen, Xun and Li are Eastern Ming Guas.
Western Group Ming Guas:
- Qian
- Gen
- Kun
- Dui
Eastern Group Ming Guas:
- Kan
- Zhen
- Xun
- Li
By utilizing the similarity of the lucky and unlucky directions in the same group (Eastern or Western), we could plan the interior Feng Shui and maximize the good effects. You will learn this useful strategy below.

Your Personal Ming Gua
We learnt the disposition of the eight Xing-yaos in eight directions, now let’s find out your personal Ming Gua. There are two factors affecting your Ming Gua. Firstly, your year of birth. Secondly, your gender.
It requires a bit of calculation to find out your personal Ming Gua. Instead of asking you to remember the formula, I’d rather do it for you. I have prepared a cheat sheet that shows the Ming Guas according to year of birth. Simply download the sheet (in PDF format) and look up your Ming Gua according to your yaer of birth and gender. It is very simple.

Personal Gua According to Year of Birth and Gender
One thing to note is the year of birth. As always, for Feng Shui purpose a year DOES NOT begin on 1 January. According to Chinese Feng Shui theories, a year begins in Spring and Spring begins on 4 February for most of the time. People born from 1 January to 3 February could consider themselves as born in the previous year when finding out their Ming Gua. For example, a lady born on 24 January 1987 should have “Kan” (for 1986) Ming Gua instead of “Kun” (for 1987). Got it?
The Use of Personal Gua and Directions
Now let’s walk you through the process of finding and using your personal lucky directions. Let us use a real case to demonstrate.
My friend Edison was born in 1982. Since his month of birth is January, his personal Ming Gua should be “Kan” (that of 1981) instead of Li (that of 1982) for male.
For people with Kan Ming Gua, the four lucky Xing-yaos are located at:
- Sheng-chi – Southeast
- Yien-nian – South
- Tien-yi – East
- Fu-wei – North
And the four unlucky Xing-yaos could be found at:
- Jue-ming – Southwest
- Wu-guei – Northeast
- Liu-sha – Northwest
- Wuo-hai – West
Edison is a Eastern group person. If Edison co-habits with other people, he should always try to find people who also belong to the Eastern group. Why? Because these people have the same lucky directions (and the same bad directions)!
It would certainly be perfect if the companion is exactly a “Kan” person because then they have exactly the same disposition of Xing-yaos. The second best choice is Eastern group people.
Now the problem comes. Although Edison’s wife is also a Eastern group person (she was born in 1980 with a personal Ming Gua of “Xun”), his little son who was born in 2012 is a “Qian” person who belongs to the Western group. A good house for the couple would certainly be bad for their lovely son because all lucky and unlucky directions are in total opposite directions. Does it mean they cannot live together?
Not really. Remember we could have rooms in a flat? The solution to this “conflict” is to find out the lucky directions for the couple and have their bedroom be located there, while finding out the lucky directions of the baby and have his room there. In this way, both the couple and the son could enjoy a private lucky space.
Certainly, this is not a perfect solution because there is usually only one entrance door per flat. So unless there are more than one entrance doors, the only entrance door could only be so located for the benefit of the couple OR the son. But considering that we usually spend at least 8 hours a day in the bedroom, this is an acceptable solution.
You may find this lesson a bit boring, yes it is, because all kinds of Calculation Feng Shui are boring. Unlike Form Feng Shui which concerns touchable things, we are talking about intangible Chi and energy here.
We have just learnt how to find out the Guas for all family members and position their rooms for the best luck. In the next lesson we will look at the Gua of a house. This will take your Feng Shui skill to another level, because we need to not only find out a solution for all family members, we also need to match the house’s own Gua! Stay tuned for next week’s lesson!

Takeaway Feng Shui
Couch (a.k.a. sofa) is almost an essential piece of furniture in modern houses. We coul easily spend a couple of hours a day sitting there and watch the TV. So the Feng Shui effects that a couch could bring could be great. Do you know that the shape and color of a couch could affect Feng Shui? Do you know how to choose a couch that is good for you?
Firstly, you need to know your zodiac sign. I have mentioned so many times how to do it, but let’s briefly re-cap. You need to know your year of birth (which you must do, no doubt), then look for your zodiac sign from below:
Rat: 1924, 1926, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020, 2032
Ox: 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021, 2033
Tiger: 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034
Rabbit: 1927, 1939, 1951 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023, 2035
Dragon: 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024, 2036
Snake: 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025, 2037
Horse: 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026, 2038
Sheep: 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027, 2039
Monkey: 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016, 2028, 2040
Rooster: 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017, 2029, 2041
Dog: 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, 2030, 2042
Pig: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019, 2031, 2043
Then, check the following advices about the shape and color of the couch.

This type of couch is the best for Sheep and Horse. The metallic leg of the couch could help the interpersonal relationship of people of zodiac sign Sheep or Horse. Alternatively you can buy a circular couch because the circular shape is also “metallic”.

Everything bulky (heavy) and square in shape belongs to “earth”, which is good for Pig, Snake, Tiger and Monkey. If you belong to anyone of these zodiac signs, you should buy such a couch.
Wave-shaped Couch
Dragon and Rabbit should buy a wave-shaped couch. Something similar would be a bergere chair which has a curved back.
